Following up on the perspective drawn from the previous post, it appears there is a deeper explanation to what we already know. It really goes beyond the human desire to exist beyond now, there is an inconspicuous measure of longing for eternity in all of us.
There is a slice of eternity in every one of us.
The consciousness of eternity is not something we ask to have, it’s an imprint on our nature from creation. Whether or not we believe in a religion’s explanation of what happens after now, of whether there is life beyond now, the fact remains that a man’s subconscious mind can be alert to an experience that continues after he’s gone.
This justifies the struggle to want to persist, as we have seen from the first part of this article.
Our trajectories in life are tended towards the hereafter. Our lives and choices are made on the consciousness of how our ‘tomorrow’ is going to be.
Let me do a little break down on what ‘tomorrow’ signifies in life. By dictionary definition, we understand that tomorrow is the day following today; a future period. A look into Cambridge dictionary in particular shows us tomorrow as a time in the future.
A TIME IN THE FUTURE
The specifics are not known from this definition. It could be any day within the week, any week within the next months, any month within the next year, any year within the next few years. One other thing that it could also be is any time beyond now.
So it makes sense to say whenever we include the future factor in our choices and decisions, we don’t particularly know when we are envisaging. We just have a time in mind.
Every business we open, every career we start, every name we etch on a wall, every inscription we leave on notes, every time we strive to be seen, every love we show, every child we up-bring, every time we plaster our faces across social media, every property we own — all of these actions and more scream “don’t forget me.”
Even when we’re gone, we want to remain. We are quietly conscious of eternity. We all know there’s a tomorrow we cannot reach. A future that is beyond us. We all have a primal need to persist.
Ordinarily, looking at how humans lead their lives, you would be forced to think most of us don’t think about tomorrow. I don’t think so. I believe the knowledge of an uncertain tomorrow is in fact the ultimate drive behind lifestyles. It’s what keeps us pushing for more.
A hired assassin thinks about tomorrow, that’s why he cares about bounties and remunerations. A wicked politician’s mind is filled with what the future is going to look like, it’s why he hoards the money and throws the part of it that can be enough to keep his ship sailing around, so that when he’s eventually unseated, he retains relevance.
The future is in our thinking. And to a large extent, eternity is in our thinking, too.
It’s why no one wants to die. Despite the imperfections and problems we go through in this wicked world, we want to remain. The bottom line of that is not necessarily in remaining alive till forever, it’s primarily in trying to do all we can now, so tomorrow does not forget us.
When a relatively young person dies, attention is quickly turned towards the offspring. Usually, there are more regrets when the children are still very young than when they are already adults. The thinking behind that regret feeling is that such person has not invested enough into his future. It gets worse when the person that passes away does not have a single child of his own.
Have you seen a seemingly vicious politician protect his children against the indignation and derisive treatments he gets from the public? It’s not necessarily love; it’s out of fear for the future. He thinks what happens to him if his investment for the future is taken away from him. If it was love, then doing the right thing within his political jurisdiction would not have been too difficult.
This innate trait is relative to the purpose of eternity; which makes it undeniable that eternity is written upon every hearts.
So this is where the devil comes in. He wires his average victim to think all that he has is just within this time. He primes them to believe there is no after-earth worth laboring for. It is this sort of manipulation that produces all manner of anomalies in our society. It is the reason for the rise in more selfish and inhuman behaviors.
It’s not a natural reaction to not think of tomorrow in what we do. It’s a product of a disruption in the coordination of a normal frame of mind.
The conclusion? Everyone thinks of tomorrow. Everyone thinks of the future, and it is the principal driving force behind every action and inaction likewise.
